BRONZE 2020 Best of CASE VIII Awards, Celebrating 50 Years of Graduates: Capilano University’s 50th Anniversary Convocation Program

Situation

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Capilano University wanted to create a special commemorative convocation program that honoured the institution’s history, traditions, and graduating students. As a milestone publication, the piece needed to feel elevated and memorable while maintaining the accuracy and professionalism expected of a university-wide communication.

Task

As the Graphic Designer, I was responsible for designing and producing the commemorative convocation program from concept through final production. The publication needed to balance storytelling, historical content, event highlights, and the complete list of graduates and awards, while creating a premium keepsake experience for students and their families.

Action

Working collaboratively with the Creative team, Communications Officer, Copywriter, and Registrar’s Office, I developed a visual direction that celebrated Capilano University’s 50-year milestone. I designed the program layout, incorporated historical and commemorative content, and created two full-page photo collage spreads highlighting anniversary events held throughout the year.

To enhance the significance of the publication, I managed the use of specialty print techniques, including gold foil and embossing on the cover. I also coordinated multiple rounds of detailed proofing with stakeholders to ensure all content—including graduate names, awards, historical information, and university traditions—was accurate before final production.

Result

The completed convocation program became a meaningful commemorative piece that celebrated Capilano University’s 50-year legacy while recognizing the achievements of its graduating students. The combination of thoughtful design, premium production finishes, and careful collaboration resulted in a polished keepsake that reflected the importance of the milestone occasion.
