Type Conference

Situation

As a personal design exploration, I wanted to create a fictional poster for a typography conference that celebrated the expressive and visual qualities of letterforms. I chose the ampersand as the central inspiration because of its unique character, versatility, and ability to add personality to typographic compositions.

Task

The goal was to develop a concept-driven poster that communicated the spirit of a type-focused event while creating a memorable visual identity around a single typographic symbol.

Action

I developed the fictional conference concept around Amsterdam, drawing inspiration from the city’s iconic cycling culture and the playful connection between “Amsterdam” and “ampersand.” I explored ways to merge these two visual themes, transforming the ampersand into a graphic element that referenced bicycles while maintaining its recognizable typographic form. Through experimentation with composition, typography, and illustration, I created a playful yet cohesive poster design.

Result

The final poster became a creative exploration of how typography can move beyond language and function as an expressive visual element. The project allowed me to experiment with conceptual thinking, visual storytelling, and the relationship between typography, place, and culture.
